Maine has enacted legislation (Legislative Document 1654) that will require employers to allow veterans to take time away from work to attend a scheduled appointment at a medical facility operated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Legislative Document 1654 takes effect September 19, 2019.
The employee must give the employer notice of the need for such leave as soon as reasonably possible.
If an employer provides paid leave, the employer must allow veterans to use it for medical appointments at VA facilities. If the employer doesn’t provide paid leave or a veteran has used all their paid leave, the employer must grant unpaid leave for this purpose.
Compliance Recommendations:
Maine employers should ensure compliance with Legislative Document 1654 by September 19, 2019.
