How to hire smart in a candidate’s market

What to do when “quick and easy” hiring … isn’t

Chances are you’ve had to hire someone. So, you know how utterly time-consuming — and frustrating — the hiring process can be! Hiring means wading through hundreds of resumés and applications, carefully planning interviews, committing to a candidate and figuring out the right offer — all for a “no thank you.” The worst part? Later that day, you’ll undoubtedly see an ad promising to deliver “the perfect candidate in 24 hours.” It’s enough to drive a person insane!

Welcome to hiring in 2019, where there are more candidates than there are jobs.

But even in today’s market, candidates face their fair share of challenges. Research shows that it takes about five months to find a new job. On average, job hunters create four versions of their resume, submit seven applications and attend five interviews in the process.[1] After all of that, it takes another 23.8 days post-interview to receive an offer![2] Talk about time-consuming.

As an employer, remember that you’re in control of the hiring process and timeline. You need to create an experience that will win over top talent and set you apart from the competition. So, take a minute to think about your current hiring process and ask yourself a few honest questions:

·       Is the job description clearly written? Does it list any unnecessary requirements? Have you asked an employee for feedback to ensure it will resonate with your target audience?

·       Is your process efficient and transparent? Does your candidate know what to expect next? Do you respond to all questions in a timely manner?

·       Are you holding out for the “perfect” candidate — at the risk of never hiring anyone? Are you waiting too long between stages and losing your favorite options?

·       Have you considered that you’re also being interviewed by the candidate? Are you promoting your company and team? Are you highlighting all of your company’s best features?
