South Carolina Adds Wage Reporting and Unemployment Response Requirements

South Carolina has enacted legislation (House Bill 3726), which requires employers to respond to requests for unemployment benefits information beginning March 1, 2024, and to file quarterly wage reports by April 30, 2024.

The details

Under House Bill 3726, employers with at least 10 employees must electronically:

·      Respond to the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce (SCDEW) requests for information on individual unemployment benefits (UI) claims beginning  March 1, 2024.

·      File quarterly wage reports with the (SCDEW) beginning with the first quarter of 2024. The reports are due by April 30, 2024 and must include an employee’s:

o   Social security number

o   Name

o   Standard Occupation Classification (SOC)

o   Total employee number of hours worked

o   Total employee wages

Note: The reporting requirements previously applied to employers with at least 250 employees.

Exceptions

The SCDEW may waive the electronic portion of these requirements if it finds a business would face a hardship, such as an unreasonable cost.

Next steps

·      Electronically respond to requests for UI information beginning March 1, 2024.
