The program will be funded through payroll contributions paid by covered employers and employees.
Connecticut to Expand Paid Sick Leave Law Wednesday, November 6, 2024 | Connecticut Connecticut has enacted legislation that will expand the state’s paid sick leave law to eventually cover all employers and employees and make other changes. Currently, the state’s paid sick leave law applies to employers with 50 or more employees in the state, and only “service workers” are entitled to receive paid sick leave. The expansion will occur in phases, with the first phase effective Jan. 1, 2025.
Hawaii Bars Mandatory Meetings on Political Matters Tuesday, November 5, 2024 | Hawaii Hawaii has enacted legislation that prohibits employers from taking adverse action against employees because they refuse to attend an employer-sponsored mandatory meeting that communicates the employer’s opinion about political matters. The changes took effect immediately.

California Health Care Worker Minimum Wage Takes Effect Oct. 16 Monday, November 4, 2024 | California The California Department of Industrial Relations has announced that the minimum wage for covered health care workers will go into effect Oct. 16, 2024. Originally, the minimum wage was supposed to take effect June 1, 2024, but it was delayed twice.
California Raises Minimum Pay for Overtime Exemptions for 2025 Monday, November 4, 2024 | California The California Department of Industrial Relations has announced an increase to the pay rates that computer software employees and physicians must receive to be exempt from overtime. Additionally, the minimum salary required for the administrative, professional, and executive overtime exemptions will also increase. These new rates take effect on Jan. 1, 2025.
California Bars Mandatory Meetings on Political or Religious Matters Monday, November 4, 2024 | California California has enacted legislation that prohibits employers from taking adverse action against employees because they refuse to attend an employer-sponsored mandatory meeting that communicates the employer’s opinion about political or religious matters. The changes were made by enactment of Senate Bill 399 and take effect Jan. 1, 2025.
Rhode Island Requires Veterans Benefits and Services Poster Tuesday, October 1, 2024 | Rhode Island Rhode Island has enacted legislation (House Bill 7058), which will require employers with more than 50 employees to post a veterans’ benefits and services poster. House Bill 7058 takes effect on Jan. 1, 2025.
New York Takes Action to Prevent Violence in Retail Tuesday, October 1, 2024 | New York New York has enacted legislation (Assembly Bill A8947C), which will require certain retail employers to take action to help prevent workplace violence and to install panic buttons. Assembly Bill A8947C's workplace prevention requirements take effect on March 4, 2025. The panic button requirements take effect on Jan. 1, 2027.
New Jersey Protects Immigrant Workers from Employer Coercion Tuesday, October 1, 2024 | New Jersey New Jersey has enacted legislation (Senate Bill 2869), which prohibits an employer from coercing workers based on immigration status to violate state employment or labor-related laws. Senate Bill 2869 is effective immediately.
